Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-06-24
This Privacy Policy explains how Rooted in Equity ("Rooted in Equity," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit our website and use our free, open-access educational programs (the "Services"). By using the Services, you agree to the practices described here.
Who we are
Rooted in Equity is a nonprofit education organization serving families, schools, and partners across rural and urban communities in North Carolina. You can reach us by mail at PO Box 24012, Raleigh, NC 27611, or by email at [email protected].
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to operate our programs:
- Information you provide. Your name and email when you use our contact form, subscribe to our newsletter, or create an account. Any message content you choose to send us.
- Account information. If you create a teacher, administrator, or student account, we store your email and an authentication record through our login provider, plus your assigned role.
- Donation information. If you donate, payment is processed by our third-party payment provider. We do not collect or store your full card number; we may receive confirmation details such as the amount, date, and your name and email.
- Usage information. Basic, aggregated analytics about how the site is used (such as pages viewed and links clicked), collected only if analytics is enabled.
- Lesson progress. Your place in a lesson is stored only in your own browser (localStorage) on your device. It is not sent to or stored on our servers.
How we use information
We use information to respond to your inquiries; deliver content, newsletters, and updates you request; process and acknowledge donations; operate and secure accounts; understand and improve our programs; and comply with legal obligations. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
How information is shared
We share information only with service providers that help us run the Services, and only as needed for them to perform their work. These currently include providers for website hosting, account authentication and database storage, email newsletter delivery, contact-form email delivery, donation processing, and website analytics. We also embed videos from a third-party video platform; when you play an embedded video, that platform may receive information in accordance with its own privacy policy. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our community.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
Rooted in Equity serves children, and we take their privacy seriously. Our lessons, videos, and resources are open-access and do not require a child to create an account or submit any personal information to learn. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. Any account created on behalf of a minor must be created and managed by a parent, legal guardian, or authorized educator. If you believe a child has provided us personal information without the required consent, please contact us and we will delete it.
Analytics and cookies
We may use privacy-respecting analytics to measure site usage. These tools collect aggregated, largely non-identifying information about page views and interactions and may set cookies or similar technologies. Where required, we will request consent before non-essential analytics run. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
Data retention
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described above or as required by law, after which we delete or anonymize it.
Your choices and rights
You may unsubscribe from our emails at any time using the link in any message. You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information by contacting us, and we will respond as required by applicable law.
Data security
We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
